Local Area Network (LAN)

A Local Area Network (LAN) is self-contained and geographically small in size; it usually is contained within a single building, or more than one building on a single site. A small office, for example, may have three computers on a peer-to-peer network. A secondary college may have 200 computers networked across three buildings using several servers, fibre-optic and CAT5 cable, tree topology and Novell Netware network operating system.

A LAN can be technologically simple or complex; it is only called a LAN because it does not cover a lot of geographical area.
