The baud rate for modems has peaked at 56Kbaud for downloading to the host computer and has meant the uploading baud rate is about 16Kbaud. This asymmetry is designed for "Internet surfing", where downloads are often more critical than the upload traffic. The interface is usually via a serial port for external modems or via the internal PCI style modems. Either way the computer has to use the serial port to establish a PPP connection to provide standard TCP/IP interface for the network functions.
