An organisation's management staff often looks at cost as a deciding factor when designing a network. But it is a matter of balance. It can often cost more to get the better system. Buying brand name workstations for example, would be more expensive than clone machines, but to balance this, a well-known brand could provide a better maintenance or repair service, reducing downtime.
Management also need to consider that the installation and purchase costs of a network are only the beginning. Invariably things go wrong, such as the breakdown of equipment and breaks in cables that require repair. There are always running costs, for not only consumables like paper and disks but also upgrading of software or extra peripherals as a network expands.
