Harassment/Equal Opportunity
There have been some instances in the news recently where organisations have taken disciplinary action with some employees who have misused the provided Internet and email facilities. Many organisations take the view that if they provide these facilities, they should be used for work purposes, although some organisations will allow some flexibility with their restrictions.
It is widely accepted, though, that no person should transmit any information which is discourteous towards an individual, or which is illegal, obscene, defamatory or offensive. This includes mass forwarding emails that contain sexual or pornographic jokes or pictures.
There have also been some cases in the courts where people have been harassed by an endless stream of emails. This does not have to be famous people who may get emails from all over the world. It can be a work mate or acquaintance that does not want this extra attention.
These emails do not have to be particularly insulting, obscene or offensive but simply too numerous. This harassment is illegal and treated in the same way as harassment in person.
