Legal Implications
The efficient use of networks relies on having the most appropriate software installed. There are many commercially available software packages designed to operate on networks, allowing simultaneous use of the program by many users. There are other software packages, such as Microsofts Office) that must be installed locally (on each workstations hard drive) to work properly.
It is important to realise that if software is going to be purchased for a network, the appropriate site licences must be purchased. There are strict copyright laws that govern the installation of software and many software houses have a variety of prices to cover most situations.
It is illegal to buy one copy of a program and install it on many workstations. A site licence must be purchased to cover the number of workstations, or users, which will use the software. It is also illegal to purchase a site licence for fewer workstations than will actually use the software. Some site licences can cover an unspecified number of computers, as long as they are all in the same location.
On the other hand, some software houses are content to charge one fixed price for their product and allow users to use their software over a network in required.
