Privacy

Because so much information is gathered, stored and communicated by electronic means, there has been a great deal of discussion about protecting the individual's right to privacy. Governments have created new laws to ensure that all organisations - government and private - protect the data they collect from individuals from deliberate and accidental disclosure. Also some laws now restrict these organisations from using private details in ways that were considered legitimate in past years.

There are several laws, some new, relating to the collection and use of personal information, including The Privacy Act 1988 and The Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000.

The Privacy Act has different guidelines for Government and non-Government Sectors. The Government Sector is the primary focus of The Privacy Act 1988, while the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 deals with the private sector. While these are two separate acts, they are closely linked, and in many ways are complementary. As with all Acts of Parliament, regular amendments are made to these laws. Organisations and individuals must ensure they keep up to date with the requirements of the current legislation.
