Mesh Topology

In the other topologies discussed, there is only one possible path from one node to another node. If any link in that path is broken, the nodes cannot communicate.

Mesh topology uses many cables to connect every node with every other node. It is very expensive and complex to wire up, but if any cable fails, there are many other ways for two nodes to communicate.

It is rarely used in normal networks, but it is valuable in ‘mission critical’ networks where network failure would be disastrous.

Some WANs, like the Internet, employ mesh routing, to give near-perfect reliability. The Internet was designed in the 1960s to survive nuclear war though its use of mesh topology.
