Star Topology

A star network has a central connection point (a hub, switch or server). All traffic spreads from the centre of the star, which may be a server or a switch leading to a server. The main advantage of a star network is that one malfunctioning node does not affect the rest of the network. However this type of network can be prone to traffic bottlenecks at the central site.

While it takes more cable, the benefit is that if a cable fails, only one node will fail.
