Sharing Software

Software can also be expensive when many copies are needed. Rather than buy many single copies of software, organisations can buy 'site licences' which authorise the use of the software over an entire network. Not only are site licences cheaper than the same number of individual licences, but it is far easier to manage one licence than hundreds of them.

When buying software for use on a network, pay close attention to the conditions of its use. Some licences let you install software on any number of computers, so long as the number of people using the software at a given time does not exceed the number of licences purchased. Network managers can run special software that ensures that only the legal number of users can run software concurrently. Other software licensing requires a licence for each computer onto which the software is installed.

It is wise to obey licensing conditions: organisations can be seriously embarrassed and fined for using software illegally.

Some software can be used by many people simultaneously in a collaborative manner. Databases are a prime example of that. For example, each register at a supermarket is a form of computer communicating with a central database, all of the computers across the state at the many government car registration branches are all connected to the central registration database, and every terminal and ATM in a chain of banks is connected to the bank's database so customers' accounts are kept up to date centrally.
