Until recently, operating a Wide Area Network (WAN) to interconnect computers in very distant places has meant leasing expensive digital lines such as ISDN. As the Internet grew, businesses realised they could use it as the perfect way to create links between their Local Area Networks to create a cheap Wide Area Network to cover great geographic distances.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private network that uses the Internet to connect remote sites or users. VPN uses secure connections routed through the Internet from the company's private network to remote sites or employees. It is a cheap and effective way of using existing public technology to securely connect private LANs.
